Who can participate in part-time French courses at Bienvenue à NDG?

The courses are open to individuals born outside Canada who are 16 years of age or older and live in Quebec. Eligible participants include immigrants, newcomers, permanent or temporary residents, refugees, asylum seekers and sponsored immigrants.

Are international students eligible for Government of Quebec French courses?

Yes. International students who hold a Quebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ) are eligible for Government of Quebec French courses.

Are tourists or visitors eligible for these French courses?

No. Visitors or tourists are not eligible. The courses are mainly intended for immigrants and residents living in Quebec.

Are French course certificates accepted as proof of French proficiency for permanent residence applications?

No. Certificates obtained from these courses are not accepted as official proof of language proficiency for permanent residence applications. Applicants must submit results from an official language test recognized by IRCC.

What levels and schedules are available for the French courses?

Courses are available at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. Classes may be offered in person or online with flexible schedules including morning, afternoon, evening or weekend sessions.

Since 2015, Bienvenue à NDG has been supporting newcomers to Quebec in their integration journey through a part-time French language program tailored to their needs. Our courses are designed to make learning engaging and practical. Our teachers use a variety of interactive and participatory methods to help you progress with confidence.

French courses offered by the Government of Quebec are free. Incentive financial assistance is also offered to eligible individuals, under certain conditions.

Eligibility Requirements

Our French courses are offered free of charge to individuals who meet the following criteria:

You were born outside of Canada
You are 16 years of age or older
You live in Quebec

Can immigrants who have lived in Canada for more than 5 years register for the Government of Quebec’s French language courses?

Yes. Immigrants who have lived in Canada for more than 5 years can register for the Government of Quebec’s part-time French program.

What documents are required to register for French courses?

To complete your registration, you must present an official document confirming your immigration status, such as:

Permanent Resident Card
Canadian Citizenship Certificate
Confirmation of Permanent Residence
Valid Work Permit
Valid Study Permit
Quebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ)
Quebec Selection Certificate (CSQ)
Official Asylum Seeker Document

Is my attestation accepted for a Canadian citizenship application?

Yes. Report cards issued by the Government of Quebec are accepted as proof of meeting language requirements by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) when applying for Canadian citizenship. You can find more information here.

How long does it take to complete the program?

The total duration of the program depends on the number of course hours taken each week:

12 hours per week – Program completed in approximately 2 years
9 hours per week – Program completed in approximately 3 years
6 hours per week – Program completed in approximately 4 years

Are the results from French courses offered by MIFI accepted as proof of French proficiency for a permanent residence application?

No. Certificates or results obtained through French language courses are not accepted as official proof of language proficiency for a permanent residence application. For this type of application, you must submit the results of an official language test recognized by IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada).

EVALUATION SESSION

It is required that the students who studied French abroad or in Quebec in an institution not recognized by the Government of Quebec, take the evaluation test.
After your registration, you will be contacted by the MIFI through the platform Apprendre le français in order to take the evaluation test.

The evaluation is not required for the following categories of students:
– Students who have no knowledge of French
– Students who have taken French language courses in the last 12 months in an institution recognized by the Government of Quebec
– Students who can present the official transcripts of their completed French courses in the 12 last months done an institution recognized by the Government of Quebec

Are french courses offered by the Government of Quebec free of charge?

Yes. The Government of Quebec courses are free! This linguistic integration program is mainly addressed to Permanent Residents, Naturalized Canadian Citizens, Asylum Seekers, Refugees and Temporary Residents such as holders of a temporary work permit or international students.

Are international students holding a CAQ (Quebec acceptance certificate) eligible for the Government of Quebec French courses?

Yes, international students are eligible for the French courses since July 1st 2019.

Are visitors or tourists eligible for the Government of Quebec French courses?

Unfortunately, visitors or tourists are not eligible. The Government of Quebec French courses are mainly addressed to immigrants with permanent status.

Yes, immigrants that have been living in Canada for more than 5 years can apply for the Government of Quebec part-time French program.

What happens if I have to interrupt my training?

You will need to register for another session.

Will my attestation be accepted as proof of language proficiency when I apply for Canadian citizenship?

Yes. When applying for citizenship you can use your attestation as proof of language knowledge. However, you need to have a certain level. You can find more here.

Since May 2026, we now offer a full-time French classes to better respond to the needs of students with different schedules and learning goals.

Our full-time French classes provide an immersive learning experience for students who want to progress more quickly, while our part-time options offer flexibility for those balancing work, family, or other responsibilities.
